When you launch Aperture, a Welcome Screen is shown :
Let's analyse each option :
Launch the Aperture guided visits under the form of web-based QuickTime tours on Apple website.
Allows to copy your iPhoto library inside the Aperture library. All folders structure will be kept. Some data won't be kept. This operation causes to double the space used by your photos on your hard disk since they are kept in both libraries.
This option seems to be the best when you use Aperture for the first time. To use this option, you need to store your photos on your hard disk in a folder with sub-folders. Choosing this option for the first time allows to import all you photos and to keep your folder structure : Aperture will create a new project with the same name as your folder, with albums named from each sub-folder.
Allows to transfer your photos stored on a memory card to Aperture library. You will need a good memory to keep in brain the importation date, as the photos are stored by session (date of creation).
Allows to launch Aperture without any preliminary operation.
You can decide to not display this menu during Aperture launch, by unchecking "Show the Welcome Screen at Startup" check-box.
